Policy Statement

It is the policy of Michigan State University  Waste Storage Facility (MSU WSF) to take all possible steps to protect our physical environment and natural resources, ensure the health, safety and welfare  of all employees, other persons engaged in work for the organization, and any third  parties who come into contact with the business.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is dedicated to the implementation of the Environmental, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) that will establish effective communications, identify  measurable objectives and goals, compel periodic compliance assessments, and foster sound EHS leadership.

All MSU WSF personnel, users, contractors working on site, and visitors are responsible to adhere to the following principles:

  • Environment: We protect the environment, conserve resources, and strive to prevent pollution.
  • Health:  We protect human health within our boundaries and in the surrounding community.
  • Safety: We maintain a safe workplace; we plan and perform our work safely.  We work within predetermined controls designed to prevent injuries and incidents. We take responsibility for the safety of ourselves, coworkers, visitors, and guests.

To achieve the policy goals we commit to:

  • Compliance:  Compliance with all applicable regulations  and EHS requirements.
  • Transparency:  Maintaining open, proactive and constructive  relationships  with our employees, campus communities, neighbors, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Continual Improvement: Improving EHS management and performance through a framework of setting and reviewing EHS objectives and targets.

If any person is in any doubt as to whether anything is safe or unsafe for persons or the environment, he/she must assume that it is unsafe until further guidance has been given by his/her manager or by the Safety or Environmental Officer as applies.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety shall be responsible for administering and monitoring this policy.
