Reducing the Campus Chemical Footprint

March 11, 2019 - Tom Grover

Based on EHS's recommendations and follow up with IPF staff, a total chemical reduction of 218,000 pounds and improved storage was achieved in 2018 (see list below). We continue in our efforts to reduce the campus chemical footprint and regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Power Plant 10,000 gallon sodium hydroxide tank taken out of service.
  • Reduced storage of hydrochloric acid  (pool use) on campus by 20 percent.
  • Reduced volume of sulfuric acid stored at the Power Plant by 6,000 gallons.
  • Installation of two new double wall 4,000 gallon tanks (with alarms) for the storage of sulfuric acid at Chilled Water Plant.
  • One new 1500 gallon double wall tank (with Alarm) installed at BPS for storage of CW-901 (acid).
  • Installation of three new double wall 500 gallon tanks for storage of sodium hypochlorite at IM West.
